What Event Led to Italy and Turkey Becoming the Main Coffee Producing Countries of the Time?
Coffee, a beverage that has captured the hearts and minds of people around the world for centuries, has a rich history that spans across continents. From its humble beginnings in Ethiopia to its current status as a global phenomenon, coffee has undergone numerous transformations. One significant event that played a crucial role in shaping coffee's future was the rise of Italy and Turkey as major coffee producing countries.
The journey of coffee began over 1,000 years ago in Ethiopia when legend has it that a goatherd named Kaldi discovered the energizing effects of red coffee cherries after observing his goats' behavior. News of this magical fruit spread quickly throughout Africa, eventually reaching Arabian Peninsula where it became an integral part of daily life. The Arabs were not only fascinated by coffee's stimulating properties but also recognized its potential for trade.
In the early 16th century, Suleiman I (also known as Suleiman the Magnificent) commissioned his court astronomer to create intricate astronomical instruments using brass which led to an increased demand for copper ore from South America. This new trade route opened up opportunities for other commodities like sugar and spices which inadvertently fueled interest in exploring new markets including those with resources necessary for cultivating coffee plants.
It is believed that Venetian traders first brought back green Arabica beans from their travels along these spice routes during this time period leading to cultivation experiments within European territories such as Spain and France although they failed due largely due to climate factors unfavorable towards growing tropical crops outside their natural habitats.
