阿拉比卡种(学名Coffea arabica)
阿拉比卡种的原产地是埃塞俄比亚的阿比西尼亚高原。它最初主要作为药物食用,13世纪培养出烘焙饮用的习惯,16世纪经由阿拉伯地区传入欧洲,进而成为全世界人们共同喜爱的饮料。所有咖啡中,阿拉比卡种占75%~80%,因其绝佳风味与香气,使之成为这些原生种中唯一能够直接饮用的咖啡。但其对于干燥、霜害、病虫害等的抵抗力过低,特别不耐咖啡的天敌——叶锈病。
阿拉比卡种咖啡豆主要产地为南美洲(除巴西部分外)、中美洲、非洲(肯尼亚、埃塞俄比亚等地)以及亚洲(包括也门、印度和巴布亚新几内亚)。
罗布斯塔种(学名Coffea robusta Linden)
在非洲刚果发现的一款耐叶锈病品种,其对疾病有更强的抗性。不适合阿拉比卡种生长的地方就是罗布斯塔种能否存在的地方。罗布斯塔具有独特的香味与苦味,只占混合咖啡的大约2%~3%,整杯都成为了罗布斯塔口感。在工业生产如速溶咖啡、灌装咖啡或液体冲泡上更为常见。
主要生产国是印度尼西亚和越南,以及科特迪瓦、中非共和国及安哥拉等国家。
利比里亚种(学名Coffea liberica)
西部非洲是利比里亚種の原產地,对于各种环境都有很强适应能力,但不耐叶锈病,因此仅在一些国家内部交易买卖,或用于研究使用。
根据ICO统计,在世界市场流通中的65%左右为阿拉비卡種,而35%则属于罗布斯塔種。这两大类各自拥有不同的品质:一方面,细长扁平形状且颗粒大小较小的是阿拉毕加;另一方面,则是浑圆形状且颗粒大小略大的罗布斯特。
Bond Coffee's Three Native Species
1. Arabica (Coffea arabica)
Arabica, originally from Ethiopia's Abyssinia plateau, was initially used as a medicinal herb and later developed into a brewed beverage in the 13th century, entering Europe via the Arabian Peninsula in the 16th century to become a globally beloved drink. Among all coffee varieties, Arabica accounts for approximately 75-80%, with its exceptional flavor and aroma making it the only species suitable for direct consumption among these native species.
However, its resistance to dryness, frost damage, diseases and pests is relatively low; particularly susceptible to coffee's archenemy - leaf rust disease.
Main production regions include South America (excluding parts of Brazil), Central America, Africa (Kenya and Ethiopia) and Asia (Yemen, India and Papua New Guinea).
2. Robusta (Coffea robusta Linden)
A variety discovered in Congo that exhibits stronger immunity against diseases like leaf rust disease than Arabica does not thrive in environments where Arabicas are unsuitable.
Robustas have unique flavors with bitterness; they make up around 2-3% of mixed coffees throughout entire cups contributing distinct Robusta taste profiles within industrial productions such as instant coffee powder or canned espresso liquids.
Major producers include Indonesia and Vietnam along with Côte d'Ivoire/Republic of Ivory Coast or Angola etcetera countries.
The three major original species — including Liberian coffee beans — account for about one-third of world market supply while two-thirds belong to either Liberian or other more widely consumed varieties like Ethiopian Yirgacheffe which can be found at specialty shops worldwide but may not be available everywhere due mostly because there aren't many farmers who grow them outside their home country so people end up buying what they know best: Arabeque & Robusta!
