Brewing Up the Past: A History of Coffee in English

Coffee has a rich and complex history that spans centuries, continents, and cultures. From its origins in Ethiopia to its global spread today, coffee has played a significant role in shaping societies and economies around the world.

The earliest recorded references to coffee date back to the 15th century in Arabic literature. The word "qahwa" was used to describe a beverage made from roasted beans that had been ground into a fine powder. This early form of coffee was consumed by both men and women for medicinal purposes.

Over time, coffee spread throughout the Middle East and eventually reached Europe via trade routes. The first European reference to coffee is found in an Italian manuscript from 1600 AD. However, it wasn't until the 17th century that coffee became popular throughout Europe.

One of the most famous stories about early European encounters with coffee comes from England during Queen Elizabeth's reign (1558-1603). According to legend, she was offered a cup of Turkish-style "coffee" at court but refused it due to its strange appearance.

Despite this initial resistance, interest in coffee continued to grow across Europe. In Venice alone there were over 1,000 cafes by the end of the 18th century!
