A Brief History of Coffee: From Ethiopian Legends to Global Phenomenon

Coffee, one of the world's most popular beverages, has a rich history that spans over 1,000 years. Its journey began in Ethiopia, where it was first discovered by local shepherds who noticed the energizing effects of the coffee plant on their goats.

The story goes that these shepherds brought some beans back to their village and brewed them using hot water. The villagers were immediately captivated by the beverage's unique flavor and aroma. In Europe during the Middle Ages (roughly between 500-1500 AD), tea was actually more popular than coffee among the upper classes due largely in part because of China's dominance in global trade at that time.

However by late 1600s European colonizers had established contact with Asia through sea routes opened up by Vasco da Gama’s voyage around Africa which led Portuguese explorers into India’s spice markets.
